Duties

Soar Community Services (formerly St. Leonard’s) offers a continuum of social housing services to meet client needs ranging from homelessness to independent living.  As part of the continuum, we offer Emergency Shelter Intake Services to support clients in securing emergency accommodations, a warming and cooling centre, as well as our emergency shelter, Transitional Housing and Supportive Housing programs. 

The Emergency Shelter Intake Services program will be staffed 24/7 and will be open to the public 16 hours a day to offer in-person and onsite support, connecting clients to available resources including housing services. Staff overseeing the Emergency Shelter Intake Services program will be located out of the warming and cooling centre during opening hours between 8am-12am and in addition to answering the phone lines, they will be responsible for supporting individuals accessing indoor support, 365 days a year, including accessing showers, laundry, food and hygiene supplies. 

As the Emergency Housing Support Worker for the Emergency Shelter Intake Services and warming and cooling centre, you will:

  • Deliver direct client service for vulnerable and marginalized individuals accessing a safe space including access to basic amenities during extreme temperatures in the Brantford area.
  • Work collaboratively with the Housing Services team to ensure program delivery to all clients.
  • Integrate a harm reduction approach.
  • Ensure all documentation, filing, and paperwork is completed according to Agency standards in multiple electronic databases for reporting requirements.
  • Participate in department and sector case management meetings.
  • Liaise with available resources and referring agencies according to client-identified prioritization of needs and interventions.

Qualifications

  • Have a college diploma in a Human/Social Services field.
  • Have a minimum of 2 years’ combined student placement and/or paid experience working with individuals with substance use, mental health and/or concurrent disorders and/or individuals experiencing homelessness.
  • Proficient in MS Office and familiarity with databases.
  • Have access to reliable transportation.
  • Able to manage occasional exposure to vicarious traumatic stress.
  • Able to make regular visits to uncontrolled environments, such as client homes and public meeting locations.  This may include exposure to smoking environments.
