0-44 hours per week, relief basis for days, afternoons and nights with some statutory holidays. Must have availability weekdays and weekends. 
Opportunity to work additional hours outside of scheduled hours.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

SOAR Community Services offers a continuum of social housing services to meet client needs ranging from homelessness to independent living. As part of the continuum, Cornerstone House supports formerly homeless clients in preparing for semi- and independent living by providing emergency, short- and long-term accommodation.

Cornerstone House offers two separate programs within its physical space including a 14-bed shelter space and a 11-bed transitional housing residence for both males and females between the ages of 18-29 years of age. Cornerstone House works with individuals who are precariously housed or at risk of homelessness and provides them with a safe place to stay, help and support with counselling and life skills coaching to support the transition towards independent living.

As a Support Counsellor, you will:

  •  Assist with established Support Plans
  • Apply the principles of the Housing First approach in day-to-day work and interactions
  • Work collaboratively with the Cornerstone team in order to ensure program delivery to all youth clients
  • Integrate a harm reduction approach
  • Help clients develop the skills and resources they need to enhance their social functioning.
  • Tour the facilities to ensure the residences, clients and grounds are safe and secure.
  • Monitor, distribute and document medication.
  • Prepare meals/snacks for clients and replenish kitchen supplies for meals.

Start date: as soon as possible

Qualifications

  • Have a college diploma in a Human/Social Services field.
  • Have a minimum of 2 years’ combined student placement and/or paid experience working with youth with substance use, mental health and/or homeless issues.
  • Be proficient in MS Office and be familiar with databases.
  • Have access to reliable transportation, as some travel may be required.
  • Be able to manage frequent exposure to direct and vicarious traumatic stress.
  • Please also note that the successful candidate will be required to provide a police vulnerable sector check as a condition of employment, however strong consideration is made to the type of offense.
