Crisis Counsellor - SOAR Community Services
37.5 hours per week. 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m.
Tuesday-Saturday bi-weekly rotation
Duties
SOAR Community Services Brantford has been an established part of the community for more than 55 years, and is accredited for our excellence in serving children, youth, adults, and families.
The Crisis Phone and Walk-in Services provide immediate support and/or counseling for individuals experiencing mental health, addictions, or situational crisis for all ages. The Crisis Counsellor will assess each situation to determine the best way to help.
As a Crisis Counsellor for our phone and walk-in services, you will respond to client needs by:
• Providing risk assessments and referrals
• Conducting crisis intervention and stabilization
• Offering solution-focused counselling
• Liaising with resources, supports and referral sources
We are also a partner agency with 9-8-8, Canada’s official three-digit national helpline for suicide prevention and emotional distress. This service is available 24/7/365 and accessible to everyone from coast to coast to coast. The Crisis Counsellor will provide immediate assessment and support to individuals who call the 9-8-8 call line.
Contract: 1 year
Qualifications
• Have a college diploma in the Human/Social Services field, with a University Degree in a related Social Sciences preferred
• Have a minimum of 2 years’ counselling experience in an Addictions and/or Mental Health setting, with specific experience working with individuals in crisis situations
• Be proficient in MS Office and be familiar with databases
• Have access to reliable transportation
• Ability to manage frequent exposure to direct traumatic stress
• Please also note that the successful candidate will be required to provide a police vulnerable sector check as a condition of employment, however strong consideration is made to the type of offense
